The New York Giants entered the 2025 offseason knowing their biggest task was finding a quarterback. So far, it’s been nothing short of a disaster.
Matthew Stafford used their interest as a bargaining chip to squeeze more money out of the Rams. Justin Fields landed with the New York Jets. Sam Darnold took off to Seattle. Now, Big Blue is stuck in a staring contest with Aaron Rodgers (who might be lost in another darkness retreat) and locked in a bidding war with the Cleveland Browns for Russell Wilson.
More Giants quarterback news:
For a team that desperately needs a new face under center, the options are dwindling too fast.
And just when you thought the Giants’ quarterback situation couldn’t get any messier, Daniel Jones decided to enter the conversation. After getting cut and signed to the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad, Jones landed in Indianapolis on a one-year, $14 million deal to “compete” with Anthony Richardson. While the Giants are still trying to convince a free-agent quarterback to take their money, Jones took the podium in Indy and inadvertently lit whatever sales pitch they had left on fire.
If there was any hope that a veteran quarterback might see the Giants as a good landing spot, Jones completely stomped that out. His first press conference with the Colts was a giant red flag for anyone considering coming to East Rutherford. Oh, Danny.
Daniel Jones just ruined any chance of selling a free agent to come to the Giants
During his media session, Jones was asked, “Tell me about your six years in NY, the good the bad.”
Jones' response was all but reassuring that the next Giants quarterback would succeed, saying:
"Uh... yeah, I mean I feel like I've learned a lot. You know, I've been uh... you know, we uh... (long pause, grimace on his face) you had some, had some good times, had some not as good times, ultimately didn't win consistently enough. Umm, but, you know, I learned a lot, and uh enjoyed the time in New York, uh, learned a lot from uh, a lot of different people and uh, throughout the process. So, feel fortunate to have had the experience there."
If that doesn't sound like a glowing recommendation, I don't know what does.
For real though, imagine being Wilson or Rodgers, two guys who understand their best playing days are behind them, looking for one last chance to compete for a championship, and you see that endorsement of the New York Giants. How in the world would that not convince either of them to run for the hills?
Jones fought through that question to the best of his ability. The organization failed him just as much as he failed the organization. You can see it in his facial expressions throughout the press conference. This guy is struggle bussing hard to not completely through general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll under the bus.
In the end, Jones didn’t even have to take a direct shot at the Giants. His body language, his words, and the sheer awkwardness of it all did the damage for him. If Wilson and Rodgers were looking for any last-minute doubts about choosing the Giants, Danny Dimes might’ve just sealed their decision. The Giants’ biggest enemy in free agency might not be the Browns or Rodgers’ indecision—it might be their own former quarterback.
