As the Los Angeles Chargers collapse, the NFL's buyers are circling like vultures, waiting for a fire sale that has begun to feel inevitable. The New York Giants should be among those picking at the scraps.

The G-Men aren't necessarily Super Bowl contenders, but their 3-1-1 start to the season has them in a favorable position in the race for the NFC East title. A mid-season trade could be what Big Blue needs to turn an encouraging start into its first playoff appearance since 2022.

While the biggest names on the Chargers' unofficial trade block (stars like Khalil Mack and Ladd McConkey) are likely too expensive for the Giants' taste, they could take a low-cost swing on Quentin Johnston.

Giants have an obvious Quentin Johnston trade opportunity staring them down

At first glance, Johnston might seem redundant in the Giants' wide receiver room. He's a big, strong receiver with contested catch ability. His basic profile seems awfully similar to that of Malachi Fields.

But Johnston is actually at his best in a significantly different role. He thrives when he's given space to run after the catch, whether that's on crossing routes or screens.

The Chargers wideout enjoyed a mini-breakout at the beginning of the 2025 season, when he recorded more than 70 yards in four consecutive games. In those four games, he averaged 5.27 yards after the catch per reception. He actually averaged more yards per reception on catches behind the line of scrimmage than on catches in the 0-9 yard range.

The Giants don't currently have a player like that in their offense. Their targets have been almost entirely focused on Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely, and many of those passes are coming on deeper routes.

Every receiver on the Giants' active roster has an average depth of target greater than 11 yards this season. Jameis Winston is certainly a major reason for that style, but adding a receiver like Johnston would give him more easy yards.

The G-Men only have four healthy receivers at the moment, so it would make sense to add another to the mix, especially one with Johnston's unique skill set.

According to Alexander Insdorf of Bolt Beat, FanSided's dedicated Chargers site, Johnston might only cost a 2027 sixth-round pick. At that price, there's no reason for the Giants not to explore a trade. It could be the low-risk addition that fuels their NFC East title run.
