Just when you thought the New York Giants were done adding big bodies up front on the defensive line, Joe Schoen and John Harbaugh went out and snagged a massive reinforcement. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the G-Men are officially bringing veteran defensive tackle D.J. Reader into the fold on a two-year, $12.5 million deal:

It’s the kind of move that sends a clear message to the rest of the league -- and NFC East specifically: the Giants are officially ready for the next chapter after Dexter Lawrence.

Reader, a seasoned veteran known for being an absolute mountain in the middle of the trenches, fills a massive void that fans have been clamoring to see addressed.

Ever since the Big Dex blockbuster trade to Cincinnati, there’s been a 340-pound hole where one of the game's best space-eaters used to be. While the draft provided sixth-rounder Bobby Jamison-Travis, you can’t replicate the savvy and sheer strength that a guy like Reader brings to the table on Sundays.

Signing a player of this caliber this late in the game, right after bringing in Shelby Harris, is a testament to the front office’s commitment to winning right now. With training camp right around the corner, the timing couldn't be more perfect for the G-Men to solidify their interior rotation and give their edge rushers the freedom to delete quarterbacks.

D.J. Reader provides the veteran muscle the Giants’ interior desperately needed

The analytics on Reader tell a story of consistency and dominance.

Even entering Year 11, the 6-foot-3, 330-pounder remains one of the premier run-stuffers in the league, consistently drawing double teams that free up everyone else.

For a guy like Abdul Carter or Brian Burns or even rookie Arvell Reese, having Reader occupy two offensive linemen is like an early Christmas present. It’s going to make life significantly easier for the linebackers to go unblocked and make plays in the backfield.

Beyond the physical stats, the leadership value-add here is off the charts. Big Blue has a lot of young talent on that defensive line, and having a guy who has seen it all is invaluable.

Reader knows how to manipulate leverage and handle the dirty work that doesn't always show up in the box score but helps win football games. With Reader and Harris now added to the front, the defense feels more complete than ever. If Darius Alexander can build on a strong ending to his 2025 campaign, this unit might finally have the teeth to put their defensive struggles behind them.
