The New York Giants will have to trim their roster from 90 players to 53 in the coming weeks. Training camp will become a battleground from which fringe players will attempt to win roster spots under new head coach John Harbaugh. But before the pads even came on, Harbaugh and his staff let go of two veterans.
Per reporter Dan Salomone, the Giants waived linebacker Cam Jones and defensive lineman C.J. Ravenell over the weekend. Jones was signed back in March, while Ravenell had only been with the squad for a few weeks after joining via the waiver system.
Both players were facing uphill battles to make the roster. Now, they won't even get that chance. This is just another reminder that the NFL can be a brutal business.

Ravenell was always going to struggle to make the final roster in New York. A former undrafted free agent in 2024, the defensive lineman has only logged 97 defensive snaps in his career. He played for the Tennessee Titans in 2025 (the Giants-Titans connections never seem to end) and totaled just 6 tackles. He played a minor role on special teams.
He joined an interior defensive line group without a clear pecking order, giving him an outside chance to work his way up the depth chart. Clearly, that chance was too slim to bring him into training camp.
Jones was a bit more surprising of a pre-camp move. While he was only on a veteran minimum deal, he signed relatively early in free agency. He was expected to compete for one of the final off-ball linebacker spots on the roster, though he would have had to surpass both Darius Muasau and Zaire Barnes to have a chance.
In two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and one with the New York Jets, the linebacker played in 44 total games, recording 41 tackles. He was a consistent contributor on special teams, playing 170 snaps on special teams in 2025. His departure gives Barnes and Muasau even clearer paths to making the final roster.
The Giants will take on a dead cap hit of $225,000 after moving on from Jones.
These moves clear up two spots on the 90-man training camp roster, giving New York the freedom to add players via free agency or the waiver system once camp gets started this week.
