New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen has done a pretty darn good job drafting NFL-ready players over the past two seasons. From Tyler Nubin and Dru Phillips to Malik Nabers and Abdul Carter, this team is starting to take shape into what could be a potential juggernaut in the near future.
Not to be outdone by his fellow Schoen-draftees, rookie running back Cam Skattebo has been showing up early and often at training camp, pushing for a larger role pretty much instantly.
Coming out of Arizona State, there were initial whispers that he’d immediately challenge Tyrone Tracy Jr. as lead back, but the coaching staff would have to see him take some reps for that to actually happen. Well, three days into camp, and Skatt looks legitimate. The fire-hydrant-built back is looking even better than advertised, officially putting the rest of the league on notice.
Cam Skattebo looks ready to steal reps away from every Giants RB
Skatt was able to show off his shiftiness and burst at practice Friday morning. On a handoff from Jaxson Dart, he immediately got the legs churning as he made his cut to the outside. He then showed off a bit of a surprising burst to outrun the defenders to the sideline:

Since fans didn’t really get to see much of him at rookie camp, OTAs, or minicamp, watching him do exactly what he did in college has to be the ultimate sigh of relief. He’s not one year removed from 1,711 rushing yards and 21 rushing touchdowns, with 45 receptions for 605 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns. His elite production got him a fifth-place finish in the Heisman voting.
Everything he’s shown, said, and done so far screams immediate-impact player. But it’s really his ability to catch passes out of the backfield and be a true three-down player that made him such a draft-day steal.
And speaking of said receiving game, what better way to end practice than on a high note? And what bigger high note could practice have ended on than rookie-to-rookie magic from Dart and Skattebo?
Dart threw a... (dart) perfectly placed ball for Skattebo to run right underneath and secure it, showing off the skills that made him a 600-yard receiver at ASU:

Overall, it's just been an impressive start to training camp for the 23-year-old. We've been beating this drum from Day 1, and it’s looking like we’re in for quite the forearm workout. Coming out of college, the only real knock on the guy was his age (perceived as older) and the concern that he wouldn't be able to bully NFL-sized defenders.
He's already proving that age is just a number, and he'll get to show off how he plans to put defenders through the ground once pads are allowed on Monday. For now, the pads aren’t even on, and the rest of the league’s already been warned.
