The New York Giants saw plenty of longtime NFL executive Marty Hurney during his two stints running the Carolina Panthers. We knew Hurney could build division winners, but who knew he was also a comedian in his spare time?
Speaking with FanSided’s Jason La Canfora, Hurney said he believes the Chargers and Cowboys are the league’s two most improved teams. In fact, the 70-year-old Hurney went so far as to say he believes the Cowboys are a title contender.
“I think Jerry has done a heck of a job this year,” Hurney said.

Giants fans should love Marty Hurney’s Cowboys take
To be clear, none of this is intended to be personal against Hurney. He’s a well-respected, intelligent football man with decades of experience around the sport. He’s not a biased podcaster or blogger.
All of that said, having any type of faith in the Cowboys being legitimate title contenders is quite the bold choice.
Buying high on the Cowboys in a winnable NFC East is one thing, especially if you believe Jalen Hurts and the Eagles are skyrocketing toward disaster.
Frankly, I objectively believe the Giants are a far safer playoff pick than the Cowboys. Betting on Prescott and Dallas to meet even the bare minimum of their expectations is too risky.
Hurney is especially high on the Brian Schottenheimer and Dak Prescott duo, which is itself laughable.
Prescott is, at best, a slightly above-average quarterback capable of keeping you in the playoff hunt. He’s never led the Cowboys to an NFC Championship Game, nor can he be trusted to have the mental strength needed to elevate a team.
The Chargers, meanwhile, have a proven coach in Jim Harbaugh who has won at both the NFL and collegiate levels. And while Justin Herbert’s counting statistics aren’t gaudy, he’s reached the playoffs in three of the last four years.
We understand why Chargers fans have buried the visuals from all three appearances.
Prescott has lost five of seven career playoff games despite quarterbacking some fine teams. Dallas wasted championship windows featuring Ezekiel Elliott and Micah Parsons.
The duration of Prescott’s career has been the national media and those around football projecting him to win the Super Bowl. Even someone who started watching football solely because of Taylor Swift knows just how the Cowboys’ stories always end.
Jaxson Dart and the Giants won’t be waiting much longer before running into the Cowboys. The two NFC East rivals meet on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 1.
