Giants should prioritize Breece Hall over Jonathan Taylor at trade deadline

Everyone and their mother seems to believe the New York Giants are going to trade for Jonathan Taylor before the trade deadline, because it makes too much sense. It's starting to feel like a foregone conclusion he is moved before the Nov. 10 deadline next week, but the only question is where.

The thing with Taylor is that he's the most coveted player available on the trade market. Basically, every team looking for a spark on offense is going to call the Indianapolis Colts about him, but given it would probably take a first-round pick and more to land him, he isn't exactly worth that price tag.

It's a good time to be an RB-needy team, because the options on the running back market are pretty fruitful. Since Tony Pollard doesn't feel possible anymore, the most optimal running back the Giants should trade for is someone who's plenty familiar with MetLife Stadium in Jets star back Breece Hall.

Hall has become expendable in recent weeks because, while he's been sidelined due to a quad injury, the Jets have struck gold in the form of third-year back Braelon Allen, who is on pace for 1,200 rushing yards this season and has been a revelation as Gang Green's feature back--and it turns out he'd be perfect for Big Blue.

The Giants should try their luck at a Breece Hall trade before the deadline

Compared to Taylor, who will almost certainly cost an arm and a leg to acquire, Hall is much more affordable. It may only take a third- or fourth-round pick to get a deal done, especially since they'd only take on $4 million in dead cap to acquire him, even though he's making $14.5 million annually.

The Jets and Giants have made trades together before, like when Big Blue acquired Damon Harrison and Leonard Williams, but that's not the issue. Barring an overpay, it doesn't sound like Jets GM Darren Mougey wants to trade Hall or ignite a fire sale at the deadline for the second straight year.

The Jets should want to see things through with Allen as a true focal point, and the only way they can do that without setting money on fire is by trading Breece--but Aaron Glenn all but confirmed that's unlikely. And the 25-year-old would be the perfect piece for the G-Men since he's two-and-a-half years younger than JT. But this would be a fun fever dream.

So he's younger, he'll be cheaper to acquire, and fewer teams will be in on him since he's supposedly not on the block. And given this team isn't total contenders yet, they shouldn't burn premium draft capital and make a splash. The mantra should be controlled aggression as the deadline looms.

No one's saying John Harbaugh should make them an offer they can't refuse and overpay, but he should absolutely try to get them to bite because he'd be a better get at price--and it appears as though he's finally going to make his return to the lineup in Week 9. Talk about timing.

A backfield where Cam Skattebo is the change-of-pace guy on short yardage and running into the teeth of the defense on early downs while Breece Hall is the primary pass-catcher who does his best work outside the tackles as a versatile weapon is the exact kind of RB rotation this team needs.

Hall and Skatt would be a supercharged version of the Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy split we've seen, and we know the former second-round pick can handle a major workload. He's surpassed 200 carries in each of the last three seasons, and No. 20 has not fumbled since Week 12 of last season.

Ever since the Giants hired him, Harbaugh has been looking for a legit feature back to jump on, and while everyone is clamoring for Jonathan Taylor to be that guy, if he can find a way to bring over Breece Hall, that would be the more intriguing--and logical--pickup for the New York Giants.
