Giants urged to fix key roster hole (but it’s not that simple)

The Giants can still address their offensive line before they ever make a draft pick.

After enduring a franchise-worst 3-14 campaign last season, the New York Giants have made it clear they're looking to have a major bounce-back season in 2025 with the offseason moves they made.

From signing veteran quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson to adding two defensive studs in safety Jevon Holland and cornerback Paulon Abedo, things could finally be looking up for the G-Men this season.

While all eyes will be on what New York will do with the third overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, don't count out the possibility more moves could be made via free agency. With the Giants having persistent offensive line issues throughout the past couple of, they could still target this offensive lineman to help bolster the interior.

Giants urged to sign veteran OG Brandon Scherff

It's no secret that the Giants have had issues with their offensive line for what seems like forever. Even though they improved mightily last season by only allowing 48 sacks compared to a woeful league-worst 85 in 2023, Big Blue's offensive line was still ranked as the 28th best last season.

Could former Jacksonville Jaguars and Washington Commanders lineman Brandon Scherff fix that this season? If you're Mark Stolte from Pro Football Network you definitely do:

"With multiple spots needing to be filled, Brandon Scherff would be a surefire guard who could take the place of Greg Van Roten on the right side of the interior offensive line. Unfortunately for New York, they don’t have the cap space to do this currently and would need to look at restructuring or releasing other players."

Adding Scherff could come at a price. As Stolte reported, the G-Men currently don't have the cap space to make this move. And with the Giants having Greg Van Roten as their starting right guard, this potential signing might not make as much sense as it seems.

With Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen on the hot seat this season—and with the likelihood that this could be their final year in New York barring a miraculous turnaround—either trading or releasing someone to make room for Scherff could help improve the Giants’ struggling offense from last season. The 33-year-old is a five-time Pro Bowler and was named first-team All-Pro in 2020. After battling injuries early in his career, he’s bounced back with a sort of late-career vengeance, playing every game over the past three seasons.

Again, this could be a relatively involved move for the Giants’ front office to execute, as they don’t have the cap space right now—but this free agent signing might be a risk Schoen and Co. have to take. We'd be all in on it.
