The New York Giants didn't make a flashy pick when they selected Miami offensive tackle Francis "Sisi" Mauigoa with the 10th pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. But not every Giants fan is in agreeance on the selection, as a portion of the fanbase is still upset that New York passed on Caleb Downs for him.

The fact of the matter is that drafting an offensive lineman is never the sexy pick, but it's often the right one. The Giants need to bolster the trenches and keep Jaxson Dart protected, so ESPN NFL Draft guru Matt Miller labeled the Mauigoa-to-New York marriage as his favorite prospect-team fit.

"The Giants needed a right tackle who can open lanes in the run game and also keep quarterback Jaxson Dart clean," Miller wrote. "Not overthinking this selection and drafting the best offensive lineman in the class is a win on value, but it's also a great scheme fit with John Harbaugh determined to establish the run."

Francis Mauigoa is bracing to give the Giants precisely what they need

With the concussion problems Dart suffered as a rookie, keeping him protected should be Big Blue's top priority. The offensive line has dealt with consistent instability over the years, so addressing it with a sure thing at OT before it becomes a bigger need was the correct approach from Joe Schoen.

The main reason that Miller noted the fit betwen the 20-year-old and the Giants as so strong is because of the identity the team wants to forge under John Harbaugh. Even though they failed to draft a running back, it's clear New York is ready to return to its roots as a ground-and-pound offense.

The most important thing about Mauigoa isn't the short-term flexibility: it's the long-term stability. He played right tackle in college, but is gonna start in as the Day 1 starter at right guard, the more immediate need. But once Jermaine Eluemunor leaves or retires, he will kick back out to right tackle.

I understand that Miami tackles still give Giants fans PTSD after Ereck Flowers, but that pick was 11 years ago. Eventually your NFL Draft scars have to heal. Miller sees the Mauigoa pick for what it is: a foundation. Harbaugh is making it a point to address the trenches early by bringing in true maulers.

Under Brian Daboll, the G-Men were one of the softest teams in the NFL in the trenches, so Harbaugh's desire to get physical is a much-needed over-correct. And in terms of keeping Dart upright, continuing to bolster the run game, and accomplishing that goal, Mauigoa is the right fit.
