The NY Giants hold the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and there's no debating that they need a quarterback this offseason. The problem with them holding the third overall pick is that there are really two main quarterbacks in this draft class and considering they hold the third pick, well, you do the math there.
The Giants have been trying to potentially fix the quarterback position through free agency instead, as they've been linked to Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson. Neither guy is obviously a long-term solution but a bridge quarterback but hey, they need someone to quarterback the offense this year and can't be left without a chair to sit in when the music stops.
It also doesn't help that Rodgers is pulling a typical Rodgers and plans to take his time when making a decision. This is something that the Giants can't really afford to deal with right now.
Field Yates of ESPN reported that if Shedeur Sanders, who is one of the top two quarterbacks in the draft, happens to fall to third overall, the Giants wouldn't hesitate to take him.
"The New York Giants at number three, with a head coach and a GM that are on the hot seat going into this year, are not going to bypass Shedeur Sanders at third overall if he is there and they do not already have a veteran option at the level of Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers," Yates said.
NY Giants "are not going to bypass Shedeur Sanders" if he slips to number three
This wouldn't surprise anyone at all though it was surprising to hear Yates say that the Giants would consider not doing this if they sign Rodgers or Wilson. If they happen to sign one of those guys, they'd have to know it's not going to be more than a one or two-year deal so why not draft a quarterback too? That way Sanders or whoever the pick is could sit for a year and learn from one of those two signal-callers.
This has not been a good offseason to need a quarterback and the Giants are experiencing this first hand. At this point, it feels imminent that they'll either be signing Rodgers or Wilson, hoping someone like Sanders falls to them, or moving up to the first pick to nab Cam Ward.
If Sanders ends up being the pick, there's plenty of upside there. In two seasons with the Colorado Buffs, Sanders threw for over 7,300 yards, 64 touchdowns, and 13 picks. His offensive line was bad during his first year and a half but he overcame that and played really impressive football. If that's the quarterback the Giants get, it'd be difficult to be too upset about it.
