Obvious Darius Slayton trade destination is on the table for Giants GM Joe Schoen
In pretty quick fashion, we are seeing some top-level wide receivers be dealt to new teams. Thus far, Davante Adams, Amari Cooper and DeAndre Hopkins - just traded to the Chiefs - all have different squads to suit up for. While Darius Slayton isn't on the same star status, the veteran wideout can still be a stud for an offense.
It's looking like his time with the NY Giants is potentially going to be ending in the coming weeks. The NFL trade deadline is on Nov. 5 and Slayton is in the last year of his contract with New York, a 2-5 side. Joe Schoen is going to be a seller at the deadline and he's expected to get plenty of calls for Slayton.
With the Chiefs trading for Hopkins, that wipes Kansas City off the list of suitors. However, a different organization makes way too much sense here. We're talking about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who need WR help now more than ever.
The Buccaneers should call the NY Giants right now for Darius Slayton
In the Week 7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, disaster struck for the Tampa Bay offense. In the first half, standout WR Mike Evans dropped a touchdown and things were only made worse with him aggravating his hamstring injury. Evans is now expected to be out for about a month.
Then in the final minute of the contest, fellow stud WR Chris Godwin suffered a dislocated ankle, which will have him out for the rest of the season. In the span of under three hours, Tampa Bay lost two leaders for its offense - not ideal.
Jalen McMillan and Sterling Shepard are the next guys up for the wide receivers room, but that's not going to cut it. Baker Mayfield needs someone with big-play ability and that's exactly where Slayton, who led the Giants in receiving four of the last five years, can come in.
The Big Blue speedster isn't a Pro Bowler by any means, but he's ready to deliver whenever his number is called. In the upset win over the Seahawks, with Nabers out due to a concussion, Slayton put on a show, catching eight balls for 122 yards and a touchdown. He's not going to post those numbers every week, but the potential is there. This is something Tampa Bay should realize and if Schoen hasn't called their front office yet, he should ASAP.
