The New York Giants didn't sign Odell Beckham Jr. for nostalgia, or to expect him to turn back the clock to 2016, as if we're experimenting with time travel. They signed him as insurance given their lack of receiver depth, and they need him to step up more now than ever after losing one of their wideouts.
The Giants got some devastating injury news on Tuesday, as Calvin Austin was carted off the field due to a non-contact knee injury during 1-on-1s. Adam Schefter later reported that it was a season-ending torn ACL, and despite the circumstances, OBJ came through.
In the wake of the injury news, Beckham Jr. enjoyed one of his most productive days of training camp. Per SNY's Connor Hughes, he caught two passes from Jaxson Dart and two passes from Jameis Winston during the competitive period, and added four more receptions during the non-card period.

However, the successful day doesn't end there for the 33-year-old wideout. During individual drills, he made an absurd leaping one-handed catch that'll absolutely be all over your social media timeline. And frankly, it's hard to argue that it wasn't the play of the day, despite it not coming in team sessions. I didn't know his body could move like that after all the injuries.

As for the catch itself, did we wake up in 2016? Because if I didn't know any better, I would say the All-Pro wideout turned back the clock right to his prime years. I guess he isn't completely over the hill, and considering how badly the Giants need receivers, the timing couldn't be any better.
Beckham Jr. picked the best time possible to turn in one of his most productive days of training camp, because he may have just locked down a roster spot. With Austin healthy, he likely would have been on the wrong side of the roster bubble and John Harbaugh wouldn't have much merit in keeping him.
Before Tuesday, Malik Nabers, Malachi Fields, Darius Slayton, Darnell Mooney, Austin, and Braxton Berrios were likely to be the six wideouts on Big Blue's final roster. But now that Austin is hurt and Beckham was able to take advantage, it's safe to assume he'll claim the now-vacant roster spot over Isaiah Hodgins and Xavier Gipson.
It's incredibly unfortunate given the circumstances, but the NFL is a next-man-up business, and no one can argue that Odell Beckham Jr. didn't come through for the New York Giants in their time of need after the Calvin Austin injury--just like he has many times before over the years.
