We hate to pile on Daniel Jones, seriously. At the same time, it's hard for NY Giants fans to get over how poor he looked in the Week 1 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. This is now Jones' sixth year in the NFL with the G-Men after former general manager Dave Gettleman used a No. 6 overall pick on him. Despite that, we aren't seeing any kind of improvement.
As bad as Jones was, you can't forget about Brian Daboll and his debut calling plays for the Big Blue offense. Daboll is known as an offensive genius. Well, where was said genius against the Vikings? Things were a total mess for Daboll and he 100 percent got outsmarted by Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Daboll deserves some heat for some of his questionable calls.
Brian Daboll's debut as the Giants play-caller was a total disappointment
Some of the decisions from Daboll just didn't make any sense. Late in the second quarter, with the Giants down 14-3, Jones and Co. were near midfield facing 2nd-and-5. Daboll called back-to-back Danny Dimes runs and after gaining three yards on the first to set up 3rd-and-2, Jones was stuffed. The Giants then decided to punt the ball away. What?
The Jones pick-six was egregious, but why was that screen to Wan'Dale Robinson called with the G-Men pinned inside of their own 20, especially with four pass-catchers bunched on that side of the field? It had disaster written all over it from the start and Coach Dabes is catching a lot of flack for it.
The expectation was that the offense would take a step forward now that Daboll is running the show over offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. Instead, the Giants once again didn't score a touchdown and they finished with the lowest point total of all 32 teams in the league for Week 1. That's a big yikes if we've ever seen one.
Following the loss, Daboll held himself accountable and said that he needs to be better. That's stating the obvious. With him now calling the offensive plays, he needs to put Jones in the best situation possible to succeed. In the matchup with the Vikings, no one can argue that wasn't the case. It's time to clean things up to take on Washington, Dabes.
