With how unlucky the NY Giants are with injuries, it only made some people laugh when starting center John Michael Schmitz went down in the first quarter of the preseason finale after getting rolled up on. He was quite literally the only offensive line starter to play, and then he got injured and was ruled out for the rest of the game? You've got to be kidding.

It was announced that Schmitz, a second-year playmaker, suffered an ankle injury and immediately the worry was that perhaps he'd be sidelined for a few weeks. With the season-opener against the Vikings coming on Sept. 8, the timing was brutal. However, despite Brian Daboll saying JMS will undergo an MRI, the youngster said he's feeling just fine and that he has no doubts he'll be ready for Week 1:

That update from Schmitz via Art Stapleton has calmed plenty of people. It's been a rough summer for him, as in addition to this latest ankle issue, Schmitz has also missed plenty of practice time due to a bum shoulder. With him missing so much action, Daboll sent him out onto the field to take on the Jets to get more live reps in.

The decision backfired a bit, as he indeed got hurt in the first half. It was yet another setback for Schmitz, who also missed four games last year - he appeared in 13 contests during his rookie campaign, starting all 13 of them. Moving forward, he'll likely take some time off to rest his ankle and then hopefully be able to practice sooner rather than later.

New York is all set to host the Vikings during opening weekend and the pressure is going to be on the offensive line to keep Daniel Jones on his feet. The concern is that the starting unit hasn't had a ton of time to play with one another all at the same time. Leading up to the battle with the Vikes, Andrew Thomas, Jon Runyan Jr., Schmitz, Greg Van Roten and Jermaine Eluemunor will be your starters.

This is a new look for the group up front and with Carmen Bricillo taking over as position coach, exciting things are on the way. The five need to stay healthy, however, which hasn't been the case for the majority of this offseason. Luckily, Schmitz's status is much better than we imagined. He'll be ready to rock vs. Minnesota.
