Because he's an offensive lineman, sometimes it's easy forget that NY Giants center John Michael Schmitz is one of the most important first-year players on this team. The former Minnesota hoss is the center of the future, with him already making noise at camp.

This week, Schmitz has been getting the run with the 1s snapping the ball to Daniel Jones and working on building continuity up front with the rest of the offensive line. There have been some ups and downs for the youngster, but he's got the right mindset with the preseason opener vs. the Lions a week away:

John Michael Schmitz is ready to keep getting better for the NY Giants

"No jobs are won - we're just a couple of days into fall camp. Right now my main focus is continuing to get better each and every day and gain that trust of that o-line room and the offense to just prove that I can be out there, I can make the calls and just be urgent with it."

Schmitz knows that nothing will be handed to him ahead of Week 1 vs. the Dallas Cowboys. The good news, though, is that he has been handling his own with some tough matchups this summer. This includes going up against Dexter Lawrence.

While Sexy Dexy sure has taken Schmitz's lunch money on some plays, the first-year lineman has also turned heads keeping him in check as well. The more reps Schmitz gets working with the first-team offense, the more comfortable he's going to feel out there.

There's bound to be some growing pains, but that can be said for every rookie on this team. Sure, Deonte Banks and Jalin Hyatt have shown flashes of brilliance throughout camp, but they've also had their struggles too.

Schmitz knows he's not going to be perfect early on, but he's ready to do whatever is needed to keep on improving and earn the trust of Andrew Thomas, Evan Neal and others.
