We have no problem admitting that we didn't know who Gervarrius Owens was when the NY Giants used a seventh-round pick on the safety out of Houston. Owens most definitely wasn't the biggest name to make his way to East Rutherford as part of the 2023 NFL Draft class, but goodness, he's making a lot of noise.

Ever since OTAs got underway, Owens has been making his presence felt and that continued on Tuesday. Per the team website, Owens recorded another pass deflection during the session, something he's been doing on a consistent basis for defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.

Yes it's still the offseason and nothing really matters until the Giants start facing off against stiff competition, but Owens' play early on this spring should have people excited about his potential.

NY Giants DB Gervarrius Owens is turning heads at OTAs

Owens was selected with the No. 254 pick. With him falling so late, we don't blame you at all if you also had never heard of him before draft weekend arrived. Despite him falling to the seventh round, he was pretty darm impressive for UH last season, posting 74 total tackles, eight pass deflections and one interception.

Understandably so, Deonte Banks, John Michael Schmitz and Jalin Hyatt have been the rookies to get the most attention from the fanbase in recent weeks. However, Owens' strong play is definitely earning him plenty of new supporters these days.

The depth for the secondary has been a bit of an issue for the Giants, but if players like Owens can step up and make an impact when his number is called, then it will be massive for Martindale moving forward.

When Owens was first drafted, it seemed like a long shot that he'd be able to make the 53-man roster. However, if he can keep improving and learn the system, then we could see the kid see significant snaps once the fall rolls around. He'll be a guy to keep a close eye on when mandatory mini-camp arrives.
