Entering the preseason, everyone knew that cornerback was a big concern for the NY Giants. Matter of fact, this is something we knew throughout the offseason, as Joe Schoen needed to make something happen to bring in a veteran playmaker. He never did.
Now, it's looking like Cor'Dale Flott and Nick McCloud are battling it out for the starting job on the other side of the field from standout Deonte Banks. Flott is dealing with a quad issue, which has cost him plenty of time this summer. McCloud is getting the run with the 1s for now, but things aren't going according to plan.
With the Giants and Jets participating in a joint practice over in Florham Park, McCloud found himself looking to make a play against Garrett Wilson. Instead, the stud wideout absolutely COOKED him, making him look silly in the process. No disrespect to McCloud, but this was an awful rep:
Garrett Wilson embarrassed Nick McCloud with an unreal route at practice
This was a nifty move by Wilson and he was able to blow past McCloud for an easy grab. We understand that Wilson is an elite talent, but McCloud getting burned like this is concerning. Can we expect this not to happen once the regular season arrives?
Depth at CB is a concern, but there's simply too much youth. There's no leader for the secondary as a whole, as Xavier McKinney is surely missed in the middle of the field too. Might Joe Schoen decide to go after a veteran ahead of Week 1?
This is something fans have been begging for. Unfortunately, the Giants have struck out on the several targets they've gone after. Tre'Davious White and Darious Williams both signed with the Rams, while Stephon Gilmore just put the pen to paper with Minnesota.
Names being floated around right now include Xavien Howard and Adoree' Jackson, though it's up in the air if the Giants are going to pursue them. With the Giants restructuring Andrew Thomas' deal, it could open the door for a CB move to be made.
We are inching closer to the regular season and there's no question that CB is one of the biggest concerns for this team and Brian Daboll. New defensive coordinator Shane Bowen doesn't have a ton to work with at the position. What else needs to happen for Schoen to show some urgency? If this McCloud clip doesn't scream out to him, nothing will.
