Just what in the heck is NY Giants general manager Joe Schoen up to now? Earlier in the offseason, there were calls for him to restructure the deal of Andrew Thomas to create some more cap space. Schoen got things done with Dexter Lawrence, but nothing went down with his stud left tackle.

Now, a bit out of nowhere, Schoen has reportedly reworked Thomas' deal, converting a little under $4.2 million of his salary into a bonus, per Field Yates. With this latest move, it has opened up more than $3 million in cap space for the G-Men, putting them at about $18 million. Do we really think Schoen did this out of the blue without having something else cooking?

Joe Schoen is clearly up to something after reworking Andrew Thomas' contract

Now, the question begs, what does Schoen have in mind? From our chair, there are three positions that are in serious need of some help: inside linebacker, cornerback and defensive tackle. The depth for the interior defensive line is not in a good spot, especially after Ryder Anderson was waived following the hamstring injury he suffered against the Texans.

Dexter Lawrence is obviously the stud of the group, while Elijah Chatman has been a pleasant surprise this offseason. However, another veteran mauler is needed up front. Jordan Phillips was supposed to be a nice get, but he was a disappointment and ended up getting traded to Dallas.

Will the NY Giants sign a veteran cornerback before Week 1?

In the secondary, goodness, is Schoen going to finally wake up and go after a cornerback? Cor'Dale Flott entered the preseason as the favorite to win the CB2 job, but he's dealing with a quad injury and was forced to miss the meeting with Houston. Nick McCloud has looked solid at times, but can the staff rely on him to make a huge jump in '24? Tre Hawkins was a camp favorite last summer, but he's playing himself off the roster.

There are slim pickings for CBs in free agency, though a reunion with Adoree' Jackson could make sense, while some fans are eyeing Xavien Howard as someone who could step in and push for a starting job. The Stephon Gilmore dream died on the table when the Minnesota Vikings gave him a deal with $7 million guaranteed.

Last but not least, inside 'backer has to be discussed. Micah McFadden was carted off the field at NRG Stadium with a hip injury, while Dyontae Johnson is working his way back from a sprained ankle. Bobby Okereke is a world-class talent at the position, but he needs some help. Free agency or even a trade could be something for Schoen to look at to provide some assistance.
