The pads are on and tempers are flaring! With the preseason almost here, the NY Giants and Detroit Lions are kicking things off with some joint practices in East Rutherford. These players and coaches respect one another, but that doesn't mean everything is going to be all smiles and hugs.
Just ask rookie cornerback Dru Phillips and Lions wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown about that. During the opening session between the two sides, St. Brown and Phillips exchanged some shoves after a play. Next thing you know, all hell broke loose on the practice field. You can see the sequence below courtesy of The Athletic's Charlotte Carroll:
Amon-Ra St. Brown and Dru Phillips started a massive brawl at Giants-Lions joint practices
Those two weren't the only ones involved here. On the play above, Jared Goff connected with wideout Jameson Williams, who had Phillips all over him in coverage. After he came down with the catch, he gave Phillips a bit of a push.
Then right after that, Dane Belton got involved, knocking the ball out of Williams' hands. The Detroit speedster didn't like that much, which led to him then firing a powerful shove at Belton as well. Both players for NY and Detroit were fired up, leading to the melee.
Hey, there's nothing wrong with a little fire being showcased. This is probably something Dan Campbell and Brian Daboll won't love too much, as they'll remind their players to be smart and not risk a silly injury over a training camp argument.
However, the good news here is that no one got hurt and only some strong shoves were exchanged. The fans in the stands were loving it, especially after Brian Burns got them even more riled up shortly after the brawl went down. We'll see if the Giants will show this kind of passion the rest of the week. Again, we don't want to see fights break out, but it's good to see Big Blue players showing some life too.
