Apparently undeterred by his much-maligned stint as the New York Giants' defensive coordinator, Mike Vrabel and the New England Patriots officially hired Shane Bowen to serve as a defensive assistant ahead of the 2026 season. It may not stop there; Bowen may also get some other responsibilities that will make Giants fans reach for their chest due to pure laughter.

While Bowen will start as an analyst who will assist younger coaches, like Kevin Richardson and BJ Edmonds, Vrabel did not rule out Bowen helping the team out on the offensive side of the ball. Vrabel reportedly thinks Bowen is such a unique coaching mind that his talent should be used on both sides of the ball.

“I think having another guy that has called plays in this league and has game-planned will be able to provide assistance offensively,” Vrabel said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN. Bowen appears to have suffered minimal professional consequences from his pitiful stint with the Giants, as New England may give him the keys to both sides of the ball.

The Green Bay Packers have pulled off a similar gambit in recent years, bringing in Robert Saleh and Nathaniel Hackett as analysts for the side of the ball that doesn't coincide with their specializations. Considering how well those two are regarded across the league, this may not be a model worth replicating.

Bowen actually was a fairly solid coordinator under Vrabel with the Tennessee Titans, but he was unable to bring the same magic from Nashville to New York. Unlike many coordinators who get canned early on, Bowen had some very enticing talent on his defense, especially on the defensive line. Statistically and on film, Bowen's defenses in New York were lacking.

The Giants are now being overseen by someone in John Harbaugh, who has shown he's consistently competent when it comes to hiring top defensive coaches. However, Bowen's tenure was so bad that Giants fans are justifiably skeptical of new DC Dennard Wilson. After all, the last coach who was on a fired coaching staff in Tennessee didn't exactly turn into Bill Belichick.

What is happening with Bowen is not unusual across the NFL. Even though his performance with the Giants was so bad that it contributed heavily to Brian Daboll's firing, friends and connections within the league will always be willing to give him a second (or third, in this case) chance.
