New York Giants Should Pursue Jeremy Maclin via Free Agency

The New York Giants have a lot of holes to fill this offseason. Their offensive line is still very shaky and their defense needs a total overhaul. These two issues were glaring in 2014, but the wide receiver position is flying under the radar. The Giants can’t afford to use another first-round pick on a receiver. They need to turn to the free agency to address this arising issue, and Jeremy Maclin is their man.

Maclin finally had his break out year after struggling for a couple of seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was thrust into the spotlight when former Eagles number one receiver, DeSean Jackson, was cut from the team. Maclin showed that he has the ability to be an explosive game-changer. The Giants could use a player like him opposite Odell Beckham in the event that Victor Cruz may not be on par.

Rueben Randle has shown flashes of brilliance, but remains inconsistent. Cruz may not be the same player he was after tearing his patella. That leaves Beckham as their only sure fire target. Beckham tends to draw double coverage, so defenses will try to make life difficult for him. The Giants need a player like Maclin to play opposite Beckham.

The 2015 free agent class may be one of the best in recent years, there is tons of talent available at all different positions, especially wide receiver. The Eagles could opt to pursue another free agent and let Maclin walk. Maclin can’t really ask for an obscene amount of money, due to the fact that he has to compete with the likes of Randall Cobb, Dez Bryant, Demaryius Thomas, Michael Crabtree, and Torrey Smith.

In the 2009 draft, the Giants were heavily interested in Maclin. They were so interested that they were willing to trade up to draft him, according to multiple reports. It would be no surprise if the Giants renewed their interest this offseason. Not only would it help them on the football field but also add yet another nice twist to their NFC East rivalry with the Eagles.
