Consider Cam Skattebo's rookie season with the New York Giants your classic case of "here for a good time, not a long time." That's about all you can say after the 24-year-old rookie running back was in full stride before a season-ending ankle injury derailed what could have been a truly special debut.
In eight games (five starts), the 5-foot-11, 215-pound human-sized fire hydrant rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns, adding 207 yards and two scores through the air.
There's been a lot of talk surrounding Skatt's recovery and availability for Week 1. He's told the media he'll be good to go, and the coaching staff seems to think so too, but hiccups happen all the time -- just ask Malik Nabers. However, if the former Arizona State standout is good to go, fans should expect the unhinged back to play a major role in head coach John Harbaugh's offense.
It's not just the fans sipping the Skatte-Kool Aid. Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport sees No. 44 as one of five running backs in the best position for a breakout 2026 season, and it's nearly impossible to argue against his inclusion.
Cam Skattebo cleared for massive Year 2 takeoff
You could make the argument Skatt was well on his way to a breakout last season before the injury. For reference, he had eclipsed 90-plus all-purpose yards in five straight games, including scoring six of his seven touchdowns during that stretch, before going down.
Davenport believes that with better luck in the health department, along with an improved front and a featured back opportunity, the sky is the limit:
"Skattebo should be a big part of the Giants offense in 2026, especially if wide receiver Malik Nabers isn't ready for Week 1. Big Blue has quietly assembled one of the better offensive lines in the game—a line that added first-round guard Francis Mauigoa this offseason."
Harby's philosophy mandates a punishing ground game. The front office solidified this identity by drafting 6-foot-6, 330-pound block-you-into-another-universe Francis "Sisi" Mauigoa with the 10th overall pick in the 2026 Draft.
Adding Sisi gives Skatt the ultimate road-paving mauler to work behind. The team also bypassed every running back option in free agency and the draft, meaning the lack of external competition gives the second-year back more runway than an Airbus A321.
It'll be business as usual with Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary locked into backup duties.
A fully recovered ankle makes Skattebo the undisputed engine of New York's new-look offense. Harbaugh's staff and this massive new line are fully committed to running the ball down the other team's throats. His rookie year gave fans a brief, chaotic glimpse of a good time. The 2026 season is his chance to prove he's here for a long time, too.
