NY Giants' Joe Schoen couldn't be more out of touch with reality
By Matt Sidney
At 2-8, the New York Giants have hit rock bottom, yet GM Joe Schoen remains confident his job is secure.
When asked if he expects to be back with the team next season, Schoen gave a firm “yes,” adding he has regular conversations with ownership and feels he has their support. While he may think his job is safe, his unwavering confidence feels out of touch given the Giants' repeated failures and questionable roster management.
From the decision to extend Daniel Jones to Schoen’s inactivity at the trade deadline, many of his moves have left fans and analysts questioning his vision for the franchise. Under Schoen, the Giants committed heavily to Jones, yet he’s been unwilling to address the quarterback's struggles, even as the team spirals into yet another losing season. Despite having chances to either improve the roster or acquire future draft capital, Schoen chose not to make any moves, suggesting he’s doubling down on a plan that simply hasn’t worked.
Joe Schoen’s confidence clashes with Giants' reality
Schoen’s comment highlights a GM seemingly unfazed by the harsh reality on the field. His faith in the team’s “direction” and his insistence they’re not far off have become hard to justify.
When asked about the lack of success, Schoen has repeatedly deflected, focusing instead on “process” and insisting the team’s record doesn’t reflect its potential. However, this optimism rings hollow when key players like Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney have been allowed to walk in free agency, and the quarterback position remains in turmoil.
Giants fans, understandably frustrated, see a team regressing, not progressing, with Schoen at the helm. His apparent unwillingness to take accountability or admit the depth of the team’s issues has only fueled fan backlash. As the Giants drift toward another rebuild, Schoen’s lack of self-awareness, and his confidence in the face of it, raises serious questions about whether he’s the right person to lead this organization forward.
If ownership truly is on board with Schoen’s approach, then Giants fans may have reason to be concerned. With little progress in sight, the Giants are in danger of repeating the same mistakes, all while their GM insists he’s on solid ground.
