If you’ve ever watched Nick Wright on First Things First, you either like him or you can’t stand him -- there's absolutely no middle ground. He has mastered the art of being the ultimate sports agitator, leaning into a smug, "I told you so" persona that either makes him your favorite TV personality or the guy you love to hate-watch every single morning.
New York Giants fans might remember him for his outburst over Jaxson Dart making his debut in Week 4 last season against the LA Chargers. The controversial host went nuclear, saying the Giants were setting their 22-year-old rookie quarterback to fail and that they were only doing it so that then-head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen wouldn't get booed.
Big Blue won that game 21-18, and just like every incorrect sports take, it was swept under the table, never to be acknowledged ever again.
Well, if Wright's analysis has taught us anything, it's that we should be skeptical and keep the receipts. Appearing on First Things First on Monday, the polarizing rabble-rouser was up to his old tricks, this time talking about New York's Week 1 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys and what's at stake:
"If the Cowboys have an ‘A’ Game against the Giants in New York to start the Harbaugh era on Sunday Night Football, it’s a catastrophe for the Giants.Nick Wright on First Things First
"
Holy hot take, Batman.
Nick Wright wasted no time pushing the panic button on Giants' 2026 season
While I can concede that losing the season opener to the Cowboys under the lights at home obviously wouldn't be ideal, it's a far cry from a catastrophe.
Wright is essentially saying that if a playoff team like Dallas plays a perfect game, the Giants -- who are still building their identity under new head coach John Harbaugh -- are somehow doomed. It’s the kind of over-the-top take designed to rile up a fan base that has finally found some optimism. Just let us be happy!
The reality? Wright is clearly trying to trigger our collective PTSD from that 40-0 nightmare in the 2023 season opener. Now that was a true catastrophe... a rain-soaked, soul-crushing embarrassment that set the tone for a brutally miserable 1-5 start, all but ending their season before it ever began.
But this isn't that team -- far from it.
With Harbs at the helm and Dart under center, the same old Giants narrative is dead. Even if Dallas brings their A game and sneaks out a win, the sky won't come crashing down. If anything, the pressure is on the Cowboys to perform. This is a team that's preached Super Bowl or bust for the better part of 30 years with nothing to show for it. They'd better come out playing their best.
Also, Dak Prescott is 14-3 all-time against Big Blue, with his most recent loss coming in Week 18 last year to Dart and Co. in Jerry's World. Dallas' all-time passing leader is under enormous pressure to keep America's Team relevant -- especially against a team he's owned the past decade.
A loss to a rebuilding Giants team would be the real disaster. If that’s his definition of a catastrophe, we’ll find out soon enough.
